Yobe Assembly Calls for Urgent Measures in Flood-Prone Areas

The Yobe State House of Assembly has announced plans to tackle the recurring issue of flooding in Yusufari town.

During Tuesday’s plenary session, presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio, Hon. Hassan Mohamed, who represents Yusufari Constituency, raised a motion urging swift action to safeguard residents and property from repeated flood incidents.

Hon. Hassan requested the Assembly to direct the House Committees on Environment and Disaster Management to carry out an on-the-spot assessment in Yusufari. He also urged collaboration with international partners to effectively address the flooding challenges.

“I appeal to the House to instruct the relevant committees, particularly Environment and Disaster, to conduct a site visit and work with international partners to tackle the flood situation in the area,” he said.

He further called on the state executive to mobilize the Yobe Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) initiative to deploy technical experts for implementing flood prevention measures ahead of the rainy season.

In addition, he appealed to international development agencies and NGOs specializing in disaster risk management to provide technical expertise, training, and financial support to strengthen the town’s flood resilience.

The motion received unanimous backing from lawmakers, who underscored the need for prompt and effective action.

Speaker Mashio praised the initiative and highlighted the importance of forwarding the motion to the Presidential Committee on Environment, ensuring Yobe State benefits from national-level environmental programs.

He also urged members to engage relevant stakeholders to turn the motion into tangible results, not only for Yusufari but also for other flood-prone communities across the state.
